As the poet once said, it’s been a long time since we rock n rolled. Your weekly Smoking Diary is back, in part because we’ve emerged from the tunnel of low-grade depression where we spent the spring and partly because … we’re smoking again. (Not that much! And if you’re Sarah’s mother, this is entirely a metaphor.)
But there are early-morning riffs to expound upon and questions to ponder. Such as: What is reasonable risk in a human life? How much safety is too much safety? Is it morally acceptable to tell a stranger on Twitter that cigarettes will kill them? What part of having a memoir that comes out September 29 — less than three months away! — scares us the most? And is depression a necessary crash from the high of the creative process, or is that just us?
Come along, as we pour the scattered contents of our predawn brain into an iPhone voice memo.
REMINDER: Sarah is starting a FREE Substack, Love Anyway, in mid-July. Follow along for more fun.
