Smoking Diary #35: How to NOT Write a Book

In which we tackle the topics of female solo travel, turning 40, heartbreaks you can't talk about, shaggy-haired Amherst grads on Tinder, weird AirBNB experiences in the Hollywood Hills -- and more.
Grand Canyon, age of 40: Not writing.

It’s 4:09 a.m., and we are restless, sleepless and somehow overcaffeinated. We take an audio ramble through a stretch of time during which we were trying to answer the question, “What will your next book be about?” Cue multiple months flying off the calendar as we try to nail down that response.

We talk about solo road trips, AirBNB’ing through Los Angeles neighborhoods, a weird couple living in the Hollywood Hills, and the highly relatable problem of WANTING to write a book but not knowing how, or why, or what.

For us, it boiled down to: procrastination, boy trouble, a common writerly confusion between topics and stories, the distraction of Jonathan Franzen novels plus researching gender differences in crying, etc.

All the secrets for paid subscribers.

REMINDER: Sarah is starting a FREE Substack, Love Anyway, which launches … at some point in the near future.
