The vomit emoji/privacy invasion situation reminded me of Donglegate, a truly dumb overreaction to tech bros making a dumb joke (amongst themselves) at a conference: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/donglegate-adria-richards

I feel like Im having my Whittaker Chambers moment right now with progressives as I used to be a card carrying member of the DSA for many years. I doubt I’ll become conservative in the way that Chambers did, but Im definitely coming to appreciate the classical liberal tradition! Just screaming Make the Left Liberal Again in 2024!

Sarah’s comments regarding Nancy’s story about A murder in Portland resonated with me. What could be more important to motivating changes to terrible policies than writing about injustices like this in a timely manner? I’m glad that the story is finally getting the attention it deserves, however, the journalist making the initial report should be credited, especially when the piece is a well-written piece and provides excellent coverage. Does anyone know of an award that might be appropriate for Nancy’s excellent work? I was wondering if the Front Page Award from the Newswomen’s Club of New York https://www.newswomensclubnewyork.com/ might be one possibility but perhaps others have better ideas. The post about the Front Page Award reads as follows “This year’s Front Page Awards are officially open for submissions! We encourage you to submit your work for recognition. You can access the rules and submit your work on the entry site, which must be received no later than Wednesday, Nov. 15. All 2023 entries must have been published, issued, broadcast, or e-published between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023. We look forward to seeing your entries. Contact us at newswomen@newswomensclubnewyork.com with any questions about entries.”

You're so sweet. It's too late for any current awards (have to be published in the past year), plus as (ahem) someone who's won them both nationally and locally, there's not much ping to them, so to speak. But thank you xx - NR

Welcome. I was also trying to think of how to get better exposure of injustices like this to fuel faster pushback and better protect potential victims. Especially with the tardy coverage by major media. I imagined you had plenty of awards.

Is Eric Stoltz considered bratpack? I know he lost out to Micheal J. Fox on Back to the future, but I feel like he fits in there. Or maybe a more interesting question is the exclusion of Matthew Broderick. I mean he was more family friendly along with Fox, but they are the same age, and what not. Maybe its more about the pairings, or lack of scandal / success financially.

Tbf the only reason I know the term and the movies is because I was what my mother called a "happy accident". My sister is 10 years older than me and as the youngest child in group of 4 I kinda just came in last place when it came to content. Instead of getting Sesame Street, Captain Kangaroo, Bozo the Clown and the like, I often lost the argument and watched things like Mtv (siblings) when we finally got cable, Guiding Light (mom), and Rockford Files / MASH / Sanford & Sons (whichever adult male was in the house). Tho to be fair to them once Hanna-Barbera had its resurgence in the mid 80's they gave me something more age appropriate to zone out too. Anywho, that's it for story time. Great show, now back to the books.

The Civic Bee story was great. I wish I had known about that before I took civics in high school, which I wrote off as being supremely boring. Maybe I would have been more motivated to learn the material if I had had to learn answers to questions like those posed. Sarah is perfect for the questioner/discussion role.

Paul Trembly great books ! “Head full of ghosts “ “cabin at the end of the world” so creepy ! Didn’t realize there was a new one.

Hey, if some progressive student or employee sitting in the audience had spied on a Trump supporter or neo Nazi who works at Columbia, no one would even mention the privacy issue. Rather the person writing offensive texts would have been fired immediately. But persecuting Jews is considered ok at Columbia based on the false oppressor/oppressed dichotomy I previously mentioned.

While I’m probably “to the right” of you guys on privacy, I think I disagree on the Columbia thing. This is not faceless government coming into your bedroom … or putting cameras up at intersections … or whatever. Context matters. In the heat of Columbia’s anti-Semitic meltdown, this was a panel about Jewish student life at Columbia attended by senior Columbia administrators. The fact that their texts were photographed by private citizens might be icky but this seems like fair game to me. Having said that, I acknowledge my own bias here and am open to having my mind changed.

I too immediately thought of the tech bros who had their private jokes displayed for all to condemn but this case is different. The tech bros were just regular conference attendees, while these deans are part of an administration that has largely ignored the concerns of Jewish students. There is no way they should have expected their dismissive texts about antisemitism to remain private in a roomful of attendees only present because they were concerned about Columbia’s mishandling of antisemitism. If I was in the room and saw those texts I would have been livid. They completely corroborate the worst fears of those of us who are concerned about what’s been going on at colleges, that not only do the administrators not care about protecting their Jewish students but they are secretly hostile to their concerns. No need for a plant in the audience; everyone in the audience was a plant. The administrators should have known better.

Oh ladies, thank you! As always, this episode is FIRE!

Nancy, I appreciate your attitude about the Kristof piece. I am psyched your story is getting more exposure, but I want you *both* to get so many more accolades for your incredible work.

I plan to watch BRATS tonight! This morning some pals and I were reminiscing about how Andrew McCarthy back in the day made out with our good friend of ours at Area. They had a date in the West Village, and she sat at the restaurant for over an hour and he never showed. The waiter said, “Yeah, Andrew does this all the time.” The 3 of us prank called him so much he changed his number. 😂😂😂 Wild times!

What a shame he can’t think, “Wow. I got to fulfill a dream millions have had. At one time I was part of something that defined the culture. I got a lot of money, a lot of tail, and tons of fame.” Easy for me to say…the drug of fame is way stronger than fentanyl.

Area! Went there so many times, did not I don't think make out with McCarthy, but maybe!

Wow! I didn't learn this much about civics in college, much less middle school. Back in the day, civics class consisted of learning about the three branches of government, and city managers versus mayors as a form of local government. I would also argue that most of the questions in the Civics Bee are actually more history questions than civic questions. After all, does anyone really care what the Whigs thought anymore?

My wife and I were both big fans of the Brat Pack and watched the documentary this weekend. We were both surprised and disappointed to discover that the moniker we associate with movies and actors and a time we loved was the read there were no more Brat Pack movies. Even though I was not even 10 when I started watching the movies (my 16 yo cousin was my summer babysitter those years though) I knew who the original Rat Pack was and that they were huge stars people from my grandparents generation loved. For that reason, I always thought of Brat Pack as a compliment - they were being associated with some of the brightest most loved actors and entertainers. And I thought they were called Brats because they were young not because of whatever shenanigans they got up to. Oh well, I was so young. So young I didn’t realize I was living through a transition in movies - that previously movie were made for adults and we were witnessing the birth of the teen driven movie. So fascinating to live through history.

As usual I loved the episode

We recently watched a series called Under The Bridge (what is it with bridges, did it all start with Ode to Billie Jean?). We enjoyed it. Lily Gladstone was in it, although her character was fictional. Did either of you know the author, she was from BC, but lived in NYC and unfortunately died young of lung cancer.

I will check out Paul Trembly. Thanks for the recommendation.

This comment is totally off topic. However in a previous comment I can't find, I noted that protests in the 1960s were a great place to meet the opposite sex. Apparently British women had the same idea, because undercover cops would start relationships with these women to infiltrate "the movement." Here is an unbelievable podcast about all this. https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/903fa575-748d-4aa5-a682-8a5299e30ad1/episodes/3cb32e11-dd8d-49c9-b1fc-61c5b6b3b3e0/redhanded-episode-352---over-the-thin-blue-line-the-undercover-police-scandal

I watched Brats on your recommendation, with my Gen X husband, and we agreed that McCarthy blamed "the article" for everything that happened after it came out. Never mind that he needed time off from acting to get sober, or that he didn't age as foxily as Rob Lowe (whose jawline is seriously architectural, one in a million literally), or that so few people can act for decades without shifting into character work. The pity in Emilio's eyes made me squirm in my seat.

Best line of the film was McCarthy quoting his wife, who warned him that a trip to LA would be "good for your humility." Indeed.
