The poster boy for #MeToo may become the poster boy for due process and its tricky way of complicating the narrative. Also, the spectacle of Taylor Lorenz, the genius of Don DeLillo -- and more!
I am also fascinated by this (Nancy you may remember me telling you I first found you via #meneither). I'm so bothered by the fact that this happens at the same time that women are led to believe that there is no need to guard themselves sexually and if you think otherwise you are a prude. No kink shaming! Consenting adults and all that! But women typically are NOT up for anything, and this comes as a surprise when it's too late. "I felt like I died that day" does not surprise me at all, and I get why you'd go on like everything is fine - you are actually trying to convince yourself that it is. But I'm sorry, you can't give someone the impression that it's fine, and your own internal sense that it's wrong is what really counts! I don't like that some men will exploit these weaknesses in women, but when I was coming of age, we were warned about it and were ready to say no! I say all of this as your resident self described prude Christian lady. I grew up with just the right amount of Catholic guilt (probably less than you'd think, but some! and it was useful). I think women were also more prepared for the notion that there would be regrettable sex. There's something to be said for your reality matching your expectations.
I've not finished yet, but gotta agree that growing stuff from seed is fantastic and often seems like magic. Some of the seeds are so tiny; it's amazing what comes out of them just from adding soil and water (and warmth).
i almost never watch podcasts on youtube, but in the spirit of trying to be a team player, i'm letting your channel play in the background while i watch movies this morning.
btw, i just noticed that the kindle version of 'underworld' is on sale for $1.99. i know nothing about delilo, but i trust you & will have it next in my reading queue.
oops - it looks like it's only discounted in canada. i should have checked before posting. it's still showing as $1.99 in amazon canada, but i can see it's $16.99 in the us version. my mistake.
I listened on You Tube ( I am subscribed) but I prefer it on Overcast (just more convenient) but it isn't there yet. But anywhere I can get your content is good with me.
Taylor Lorenz is a despicable troll. I don't like Ronan Farrow either. Did his mother really take him somewhere to get his legs lengthened?
Simon Schama is one of the UK's greatest living historians. He wrote a two volume history of the Jews (there may be a third volume coming as the second ended in 1900). He also wrote a highly regarded history of the French Revolution called Citizens. My understanding is that he is more like Burke than Paine, he does not like the French Revolution.
Oh yes! He wrote "Citizens"! Which I pledged to read and have yet to. It's a favorite of the "The Rest is History" guys and of course, Moynihan. On the list - NR
She really is despicable. You know, when I was young I may not have understood Pearl Harbor and certainly didn't reflect on it's significance on December 7 every year. But I also didn't tell my parents or an entire generation that lived through the war to get over it! As to Sarah's story about crack babies, for sure, me and my immature friends did similar immature things. Taylor Lorenz is hardly a child! She needs to get over herself.
wait wait wait… how am I only now just learning about Harvey’s erectile dysfunction? Was it in the NYT story and I just forgot? All this time I thought he was accused of (penetrative) assault against multiple victims
Sarah, totally with you on that Earnhardt docuseries... it was spot-on storytelling! Got me thinking how podcasting today is a lot like NASCAR was back in the early Earnhardt days... everybody racing, crashing into each other, trying to grab a little bit of the spotlight and get a win by any means necessary. :-)
Streaming is replacing cable and broadcast fast and I was happy to see that y’all decided to start staking out your turf on YouTube.
Seriously though, I listen to wayyyyy more streamed content than I should. Smoke 'Em stands out big-time. Your stories, your vibe, that real talk... it's refreshing in a world where so many people seem to resort to shouting to be heard. You two are really good at this.
And hey, gotta say, y’all LOOK just as fantastic as you sound! Your personalities and smiles are such an alluring combo... lol!
Can’t wait to see you both trade in those "first cars you personally built in your closets" for an evolving, decked-out studio one day.
I have really enjoyed and continue to enjoy being along for the ride. (I'll post this to YouTube too, to help with engagement there... as I think that helps?)
A tangent at the end of the episode reminded me of an apocryphal story that I heard many years ago.
A man gets into an elevator with Tallulah Bankhead. When the doors close he leans over and says, “You know, I’d love a little pussy.“ She replies, “So would I dear, mine’s as big as my hat.”
I second the motion for Sarah to got to NYC to report on the Weinstein and Diddy cases! Love the discussions on this - I feel like every time you do I learn more new facts. Wild to think he might get the charges dropped (and that I wouldn’t be mad about it??) after becoming a literal devil in public perception.
Also downloaded samples of Libra and Underworld - such high praise from you both, must check them out.
I can’t get enough of your #MeToo movement (post-mortem?) content. I love when Sarah commented that the goal of the movement was to “put all the men in jail.”
Later, she followed up to observe the contradiction between being for criminal justice reform (and being lenient toward violent criminals), but heaven forbid forgive a sex pest!
Curious if you’re following this recent case: New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson has been accused of rape and domestic violence in a civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court late Thursday by a woman who said she dated him for almost five years, beginning when he was a freshman at Duke.” (The Althetic)

It’s gone! Interesting how something starts to trend and they can immediately raise the digital price…

Taylor Lorenz is a Millennial whose whole schtick is to act like a Boomer's caricature of a Zoomer.
