Nancy, that is the greatest baby picture ever! Sarah, I see a little Phillip Seymour Hoffman there. I myself was a dead ringer for Buddy Hacket.

Now that I've listened to the whole episode, I have to add that my dad (who, when I was a baby, observed my uncanny resemblance to Buddy Hackett) also credited me with a stunning resemblance to Jaclyn Smith during the Charlie's Angels years. I'm sure through the eyes of a loving father, he really saw it, but I was the most awkward child ever. As much as I loved him for it, I was not buying it. He was on the money about Buddy Hackett though.

Please get an intern to write your show notes! 😆

I listen to this show because of the chemistry. You two go together like salt and pepper. And the best part is you trade off between being the salt and the pepper!

I'm an artist and designer who spends a lot of time alone working on my stuff, but I still need social stimulation. Smart, funny people being themselves and yakking on podcasts fill the bill, and yours is one of the best. Raising my La Croix to many more years of it!

Congratulations on 1 year 🎈🎉🎊 with non and regular alcoholic beverages 🥂

Love this hour or so of intelligent, funny, informative women and occasional men talking. Sarah don’t forget Twister with PSH... as Dusty... first movie I remember him in. Great actor. Nancy your life mottos are inspiring and I love your Portland reporting. I always look forward to putting in my earbuds tuning out and turning on Smoke em! Also in the 80s my husband used worked on an oil rig off the coast of California. When the smoking light went on someone would yell “smoke em if you got ‘em” I know the origins have been discussed just thought I’d add that tidbit. Thanks for the pod it’s a highlight of my week.

Agree with all, and I love the additional "smoke 'em" tidbit. Twister -- that's that tornado movie, isn't it. Never did see that. I see Alan Ruck from Succession is in it.

Yes a blockbuster as they say with the late Bill Paxton and yes Alan is the villain.

I watched Twister last night -- lots of action! Actually, Cary Elwes, as Jonas, was the villain, Alan Ruck is on the good team. Barely recognized him, so much younger.

Ohhh right !!!! Whoops! I liked it saw it in the theater and several other times. I liked Helen Hunt as Jo and I’ll watch Bill Paxton in anything.

Lovely! and -- Happy Anniversary!

I am often praising the show notes, but you could be right -- no need for them to take excess time. Feel free to dial it back.

I vaguely recall a brief discussion of what to name the podcast way back in #4, or #5? but I don't remember hearing any of the ones on Sarah's list.

Fun to hear a different version of the intro on the outro, too!

I do also love show notes, but can see where it may take a lot of time to pull together. Show note sprinkles will do me just as good. Do know we appreciate all the time you take to do them, Sarah!

I loved Sarah's interpretation of "make more pie" being about having enough for everyone, metaphorically (and I'm sorry I had to miss your live meetup, major FOMO over here).

P.s. I love the "TV talk" someone here commented about. I learned about a lot of great shows and films bc of you guys. Also, I know they're a lot of work, but I love the shownotes (especially if the links don't take me to an article I can't get to behind a paywall); I've gone back to earlier episodes specifically for them.

Agreed on the article links that bypass paywall.

One of the good things about having a poor movie memory is that you can see a whodunnit more than once - I've just finished watching the four Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple movies, lots of fun, and although I've seen them all before since childhood I really couldn't remember any of the perpetrators!

Although some movie revelations really persist in the mind - meaning a second watch is definitely not the same - Sixth Sense and the Crying Game spring to mind!

- I was a fan for awhile. Withdrew after, IMHO, y’all got too deep in the weeds about tv shows, then got sucked back in Godfather style. Now an annual member (and I fast forward past the tv talk. Though perhaps if you filled in some of the basics like Ethan Strauss does with sports, I might listen.)

- Speaking of Ethan, my podcast app (Overcast) lets me skip the beginning/ending of podcasts in 5 second increments. So I usually do. There are only three podcasts that I listen to from the start for the music: yours, Ethan’s, and Fifth Column. Barpod is ok but I also skip past the goofy chit chat.

- Elon was an asshole re: twitter but it’s great to be able to read screenshots of tweets inside a substack post. Previously the link took me out of Substack and into Twitter. Annoying. Have to admit I’m more into text than photos and not a fan of video (which explains my detachment from tv shows)

- episode notes : links are good but I do skim them

- and I usually find podcasts thru my app and if I like them THEN I’ll go to substack. All you gotta say is, “You can find Smoke Em on Spotify, Apple, or your favorite podcast app!”

-Nancy I just made another half-batch of red sauce. Then I discovered a previous frozen batch still in the souper cubes (*) waiting to be wrapped up in freezer paper. Rather than feeling chagrined, I thought, “Great! Plenty of red sauce!” Lately I’ve been adding a cup of red sauce to a batch of bean chili instead of a small can of plain tomato sauce. The meat adds to the flavor without overwhelming the chili.

- Sarah, your smoking diaries are so moving that I almost wish I still smoked so I could light up with you. I think you have many more books within you. I hope you will write them and a publisher will print them.

P.s. and I’d gladly pay Substack itself a monthly fee to be able to edit my typos within the app. Or maybe that’s a feature now? Must check.

Pps. Souper Cubes. Love em. https://www.soupercubes.com/

I second Souper Cubes! I have two tray's worth (2-cup portions) of Nancy's red sauce in the freezer. I'm going to make Nancy's lasagna again (YUM!) when my son comes home from college in two weeks.

Happy Anniversary! It have gotten so much pleasure listening to the two of you(and meeting our community on the Zooms).

Re: the smoking diaries and movies. Smoking is far less prevalent now than it was in the past, and I think nowadays many actors don't know how to smoke and it shows in current movies. In a way that is a shame, because in movies in the past the act of smoking could be a performance in itself. And in B&W movies the camera could caress the exhaled smoke. I was captivated by Billy Bob Thornton's smoking in the Coen brothers movie The Man Who Wasn't There (filmed in B&W).

BTW, we just watched The Fablemans (just OK and too long) and Paul Dano seemed to bear a resemblance to Matt Welch. I have never seen Matt in person, so am I mistaken?

Again, thank you for the podcast.

Nancy, I love your idea of a "Reading in Bed" podcast. You might appreciate this word I just stumbled on this morning: "librocubicularist", a person who reads books in bed. It's an awful, sesquipedalian word I can't even pronounce, but you and Sarah can certainly handle it! (And how about that "sesquipedalian" reference, huh? ...My brain hurts now.)

I'm reading "The City of Mirrors," the 3rd novel in the trilogy, "The Passage" by Justin Cronin. Also, "The Best Minds," by Jonathan Rosen, nonfiction about the descent into madness (and eventual committing of murder) of his best childhood friend. Bari Weiss last week ran an interview with Rosen

You don't have to have so many show notes. What irritates me is when you're looking at an episode detail in apple music and the description doesn't say anything about what topics are discussed. I just need a brief overview of what's in the episode. Personally.
