Frank Langella and Fred Savage get poleaxed for vague reasons because "intention doesn't matter," while Sarah and Nancy discuss the expanding definition of abuse
Also, though two different sets of circumstances, the tone of attacks (maybe too strong a word) directed at Amber Heard right now, especially on social media, seem reminiscent of what Monica Lewinsky endured when her affair with Clinton was revealed. Heard may end up being the guiltier party in this train wreck of a relationship (I’m holding of judgment until her side has been fully argued in court) but no matter the outcome I’m disappointed to see our society hasn’t learned that particular lesson. Goes for Jada too (who I’m no fan of). They don’t deserve to be dragged like that. I’m not sure if Depp’s career will recover, but can’t help thinking Heard’s might be over.
I agree with this. She’s getting dragged way too hard, especially given some of the credible tales of coercion and control. As for society learning, I fear each generation has to make their own messes, and this seems to be (one of) theirs.
New David Simon show?! I’m so out of the loop. I started “Russian Doll” and fell asleep and/or lost interest, I wonder if I was bothered by whatever plot devise Nancy mentioned (I can’t remember now). Sometimes I get cranky and avoidant when people praise a show too much. It’s a problem I’m working through. I didn’t see the Sopranos until a few years ago (!!). Whaddaya know? Pretty damn good.
Agree with Nancy about the Substack app. Notifies me whenever an episode drops from any of my subscriptions. So much easier than email. I’m using the app right now to type this comment in fact.🙂
One thing I find is that when someone like Fred Savage or really anyone is accused of impropriety, it is very hard not to think”where there is smoke... That’s the tragedy of false accusations, if in fact they are false. In our minds that person will always be tainted. Yes, you can go back and correct it if it’s false but I think that once the seed is planted in the minds of people, it’s very hard to uproot it.
That’s exactly right. There’s a page six item today that detailed some more of his behavior, including some gnarly things he said to some employees, but the way these things are being handled, it’s hard to know, and page six is, well, page six.
Once you described the actor fired from Netflix, I knew exactly who he was because he has been creeping me out since 2005 in "Unscripted" on HBO. Did anyone watch this show?
I called him generically corporate, but probably more accurate is generically creepy. Then again, I’ve met actors like that who turn out to be the nicest guys. But I don’t know anything about Langella.
For the kinda’ true crime book club/movie club/ canceled club: “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt
Speaking of book clubs, would anyone like to gather online to discuss Blackout and To the Bridge? I'd happily organize and host.
Well I think several authors might be up for that! To be discussed Monday podcast!
Sign me up! I loved the book. Had a great conversation with Sarah about the book on my podcast plus Xanadu!

No judgment but I can’t believe Sarah hasn’t seen Russian Doll yet! And, new David Simon show on HBO is good https://www.hbo.com/we-own-this-city

Tried to do second season of Russian Doll. Not working for me...
Fair!
Thank you! I haven't been able to watch the past three "big" shows without getting bored/finding them slow, most recently, "The Staircase."

Another great discussion. Sarah and Nancy go deep but always remain entertaining!

Example: Goldblum. Creepy but who knows how he behaves IRL.
I did not. But yes, Langella has a distinctive... unsettling quality, maybe mostly in the eyebrows
It was a semi-improvised show produced by George Clooney. He was the "acting coach" and had some cringe worthy scenes with very young actresses.
