The Atlantic writer on covering third-rail subjects during the culture wars, COVID as accelerant and REZ BALL, the new film inspired by his book CANYON DREAMS: A BASKETBALL SEASON ON THE NAVAJO NATION
You know how sometimes you read journalism on a subject you know well and realize the journalist doesn't quite grasp it? The opposite happened when I read a Michael Powell story on a controversy I was personally familiar with: He got it exactly right, and then I felt I could trust his writing on other matters, too. I'm a big fan.
Meg Smaker immediately struck me as the kind of person that truly gives a shit about people, like she has no choice in the matter. Watching that whole story run its course made me wanna take a hammer to someone. Tried to get a screening for that film here abouts but as far as I know they STILL see it as some kind of racist propaganda. Mindboggling.
Great interview about a great subject—exploring other cultures and getting it right! Powell is very modest for how accomplished he is but maybe that’s his secret. Thoughtful conversation with interesting points. Definitely checking out Michael’s book and so happy at the shout out to Garth Greenwell—another wonderful writer!
