We go deep on Roe v. Wade, including its complicated legal origins. Nancy doubles down on the "safe, legal and rare" position, while Sarah tells the story of her own abortion at the age of 30
“Look, I’m stacked. These days I’m substacked.” Literally laughed out loud.
IMO, Heard addressing her testimony to the jury is a sign of normal testimony prepping by her lawyers. In my profession testifying is not an uncommon thing (tho I’ve never testified) and we are trained to testify directly to the jury out of respect and to connect. If you noticed, several of the witnesses who gave expert testimony also spoke directly to the jury.
As far as what’s reasonable - how we think someone would or wouldn’t react to something - we couldn’t see Johnny reacting this way or that because that’s not how people react - also a lesson in my career, reasonable people don’t end up in in court cases like this. What’s reasonable ran out the barn door long time back.
I’m a pro choice liberal and I’m happy to hear you share some of my concerns about abortion rights: it is a potential life and why are father’s not given more of a voice. Also, I’ll never forget the day I was in my Army barracks and two girls were sharing stories about how many abortions they and their cousins had each had (all 3+ each). I’ve never been pregnant, but there are circumstances I could see myself having an abortion and circumstances I couldn’t, but I just find it hard to imagine doing it over and over again.
Enjoy your visit to NoVA, Sarah. I’ll watch for you in the court room. :)
That's a good point about Amber's eye contact. I think it's particularly conspicuous because she's an actress, and people are trying to figure out what part of this, if any, is a performance. Not fair, really: The court is a stage -- as is life. (This is Sarah, btw -- duh, because Nancy is so done with that Depp trial.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and hearing more background about the women involved in Roe vs Wade.
You both have great chemistry together much like the guys at Fifth Column (which is how I was introduced to you). After listening to Sarah’s experience with abortion, I had to upgrade my subscription.
Looking forward to more words (spoken and written) from you both.
Oh and Nancy, if you have the time and inclination, could you say a little more about how you are both pro choice and pro life - what does it look like to you to be both? I’m might be the same, so curious if we have the same idea.
This take struck a chord with me... I think I largely feel the same way. I am against a ban on abortion because I don’t feel prohibition works and I don’t want to criminalize a medical procedure. However, I can’t help but feel like many in the pro choice camp glorify abortion like it’s a wonderful strong female thing to do with no consequences. I sympathize with abortions should be legal, safe, and rare. I don’t see that being the mainstream take anymore within pro choice groups. I loved this episode and was happy to hear two strong, intelligent females have thoughtful discussion on an often morally and ethically messy topic. It’s okay to be pro choice and pro life damn it!!
Oh my goodness. This is what my life (and my podcast playlist) has been missing. It’s a delight to listen to you two talk to each other.
Also, every dress I wear becomes a “tata dress”.
Same. Glad to have you here, friend.

Admittedly I’ve found myself wondering how much is performance too. She is an actress after all.

I laughed out loud at the “High School prom date with Pam Anderson”
You gals (can I say that?) are great together.
What a pleasure! Even when I disagree! Keep the awesome conversations coming!

Will do
Second that
Is there a specific David Foster Wallace essay they're referring to? Googling...
Consider the lobster, maybe?
Sarah and Nancy - thank you for a good and honest discussion about this very topical topic!
