Hmmm. A lot I could say about topics you discussed in this episode, but I’m bad at being succinct so I’ll keep it to Depp-Heard. Depp’s testimony was riveting, especially for me because I recognized the look on his face as he talked about his abusive, narcissistic mother. Like he’s got one foot in the present, and one very much in the past and part of him is reliving the past as he describes it. I had a mother (and stepfather) very much like Depp’s, though the degree of his seems to be somewhat more intense and frequent. I’m not all surprised by the Betty Sue tattoo - we don’t stop loving abusive parents. We never stop really wanting their approval, or striving for it even if to deal with the disappointment leads us down a self destructive path of various addictions. I think though we might eventually find out about the abuse Amber also suffered, because if Depp’s depiction of her abuse is true, she probably had a childhood not unlike Depp’s in that way. Abusive parents, and continued striving for their acceptance and love. They are two sides of the same toxic coin. Except Amber’s dysfunction has manifested as verbal and physical abuse of loved ones. I did that with my teenage boyfriend. I recognize myself (well my teenage self) in her abusive behavior, though again definitely not to that extent. Both are victims of abuse. One turns his pain inward, the other turns her pain outward. While I can sympathize with them in that way... I’ve always said that once I became aware of my damage, it became my responsibility to make sure it didn’t hurt others. They are sympathetic but they are also responsible for how they have hurt others either through abusing others or abusing themselves in away that also hurts their loved ones. They need to clean up their sides of the street. So yeah, I’m really interested to see what Heard’s testimony reveals about her. And I’ve known who she was for several years. I love horror movies and she was in a great independent movie All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and a bit part in The Informers, and adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis book. Did you know she has a kid? I hope for the kid’s sake she works on herself. Also, hope some other commenters show up hear. Would love to know thoughts of others. Cheers
I've actually never seen it! This line on Wiki might explain the under-the-radarness: "Despite its international attention, the film remained unreleased in the United States for over seven years after it was completed; this was due to complications with its distributor." But the plot summary, well: "That night, Jake gets offended over a joke and storms off to a nearby barn, where Marlin performs oral sex on him." Sounds like a Texas adolescence to me.
Such valuable insight. I've often wondered what sorts of grand Gatsby-esque endeavors have been undertaken to win the love/approval of parents, which is often un-winnable, maybe because they're long gone, maybe because they're incapable of love. The world is a strange and curious place, and our motivations are often invisible to us. But thank you for listening as we try to make sense of it all. Oh, and I had no idea Amber Heard had a child, but Google confirms this: A 1-year-old named Oonagh, born through a surrogate. We wish her the best on what I suspect will be a very complicated journey.
The part where you discussed how Depp and your ex (I think) were just trying to be normal resonated in an uncomfortable way with me. I have a chronic illness so the idea of taking medication or drugs just to be normal or without pain was striking. I've been really enjoying your conversations and can't believe you've only known each other a couple of months!

How did I miss Mandy Lane? Several good actors in it too… thanks for mentioning it!

Oh boy, Texas has changed!

Thank you so much! As for knowing each other, I don't think it's even been two months...
