It’s 6:23am in Galveston, TX, and the wind is so strong you can hear the sound of leaves rattling along the sidewalk. (Good luck with that lighter.) Your narrator is having a bit of a fling with the quirky Galveston, an island off the coast of Texas with a New Orleans vibe and a rich past that includes a hurricane that still ranks as the greatest natural disaster in America’s history. This prompts a story about our narrator’s own history — with men, that is, specifically a guy in Kansas City she was supposed to be visiting this week. This will not be happening. Mysteries abound, as we stroll through hauntings, both emotional and supernatural, and stop along the way to discuss the name of every Backstreet Boy, a stuffed cat in a bay window, and the risks and rewards of being open to the world.
